The artwork is often referred to as the Dutch Mona Lisa. It is sometimes wrongly believed that Johannes Vermeer became close with a fictional servant named Griet, whom he hired as an assistant and had sit for him as a painting model while wearing one of his wife's pearl earrings.
About the artist: Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675), in original Dutch Jan Vermeer van Delft, was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle class life. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague.
